UNESCO to Hold Workshop on Water Management in Iran
2006-6-21 - 23:10 - Pendar

Tehran, 21 June 2006 (CHN Foreign Desk) -- City of Karaj in Tehran province will be the host of the Training Workshop on Application of Models and New Techniques in Groundwater Management in Arid and Semi-arid Regions which will be held from 29th of July to 1st of Augusts.

This workshop is organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the cooperation of UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office, Tehran Regional Center on Urban Water Management (RCUWM), Iran’s Ministry of Jihad-e Agriculture, and Toosab Consulting Engineering Company in Iran.

According to UNESCO, one of the main goals of this workshop is to determine the application of groundwater models and new techniques for groundwater investigation, particularly for trainers in arid and semi-arid regions. Considering that the period from 2005 to 2015 has been called the International Decade for Action, entitled “Water for people, Water for Life” by the General Assembly of the United Nations, UNESCO has started serious actions in form of seminars and workshops to highlight the importance of water and the necessity for better usage of water in everyday life and that shortage of water will threaten the health of human societies.

Locating in a semi-arid zone, Iran has to learn more about how to manage its sources of water. It is a country with an ancient background in managing groundwaters and enjoyed a developed technology during the ancient times for extracting underground waters. The remained evidence in historical fortresses around the country is a poof to this claim. Aqueduct construction in Iran dates back to 3000 years ago.

The main topics of this workshop will be as follows: a review on the basis for mathematical modeling and a review on the most popular groundwater models, the role of mathematical modeling in groundwater development projects, agricultural recharge and mathematical models, monitoring and modeling groundwater quality, and application of traces in groundwater research.
